Sonoran Retreat

Arizona

A landscape shaped by movement, shade, and discovery.

This residential concept is organized as a series of intimate outdoor spaces connected by a softly meandering garden path. Rather than revealing the entire landscape at once, the design allows each space to unfold gradually through layered desert planting, mature tree canopies, natural stone, and carefully framed views.

The planting palette balances sculptural agaves and cacti with ornamental grasses, flowering perennials, and softer desert textures, creating a garden that feels lush without losing its connection to the surrounding Arizona landscape. Seating, fire, water, and dining areas are woven into the planting rather than set apart from it, allowing the landscape itself to define each outdoor room.

At the larger scale, the garden opens toward the mountain backdrop and pool, creating a strong relationship between the intimate spaces close to the home and the broader desert beyond. The result is a landscape designed not simply to be viewed, but to be experienced slowly through movement, changing light, texture, and moments of retreat.
